Unmistakable: Lessons For Life From 1 Peter #6 - Unmistakable Leadership

I CAN BECOME AN UNMISTAKABLY GREAT LEADER IF…

1. I CHOOSE MY LEADERSHIP MODEL CAREFULLY.

And now, a word to you elders of the church. I, too, am an elder; with my own eyes I saw Christ dying on the cross; and I, too, will share his glory and his honor when he returns. Fellow elders, this is my plea to you:

1 Peter 5:1

  • God gives my primary leadership model in Christ.

It was to this that God called you, for Christ himself suffered for you and left you an example, so that you would follow in his steps.

1 Peter 2:9 (GNB)

Let Christ himself be your example as to what your attitude should be.

Philippians 2:5 (Phillips)

  • God gives my secondary model in leaders who are Christ-like.

And now, a word to you elders of the church. I, too, am an elder

1 Peter 5:1a

So imitate me, watch my ways, follow my example, just as I, too, always seek to imitate Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:1 (VOICE)

Remember your leader who taught [proclaimed; spoke] God’s message to you. Remember [Consider; Reflect on] ·how they lived and died [the outcome/result of their way of life], and ·copy [imitate] their faith.

Hebrews 13:7 (EXB)

NOTE: Unmistakable leadership, is unmistakable leadership.

An elder must be a good leader of his own family. This means that his children obey him with full respect. If a man does not know how to lead his own family, he will not be able to take care of God's church.

1 Timothy 3:4, 5 (ERV)

2. I CHOOSE CARING OVER COMPULSION.

Here's my concern: that you care for God's flock with all the diligence of a shepherd. Not because you have to, but because you want to please God.

1 Peter 5:2a (MP)

  • A good leader cares for and wants to please God.

  • A good leader willingly cares for (serves) those he/she leads.

  • A good leader genuinely cares for (loves) those he/she leads.

3. I CHOOSE SERVING OVER SELFISHNESS.

…not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God.

1 Peter 5:2b (NLT)

4. I CHOOSE DEMONSTRATING OVER DICTATING.

Don’t lead them as if you were a dictator, but lead your flock by example.

1 Peter 5:3 (NLT)

5. I CHOOSE STEWARDSHIP OVER OWNERSHIP.

Be shepherds over the flock God has entrusted to you…. Don't be rulers over the people entrusted to you

1 Peter 5:2a, 3a (GW)

Listen to your leaders and submit to their authority over the community, for they are on constant watch to protect your souls and someday they must give account. Give them reason to be joyful and not to regret their duty, for that will be of no good to you.

Hebrews 13:17 (VOICE)

6. I CHOOSE THE ETERNAL OVER THE IMMEDIATE.

And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.

1 Peter 5:4 (NLT)

We can’t allow ourselves to get tired of living the right way. Certainly, each of us will receive everlasting life… if we don’t give up.

Galatians 6:9 (NOG)

I CAN MAKE LEADING ME JOYUS AND PRODUCTIVE BY…

  • Choosing to be Humble.

Young people… place yourselves under the authority of spiritual leaders. Furthermore, all of you must serve each other with humility, because God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble. Be humbled by God's power so that when the right time comes he will honor you.

1 Peter 5:5-6 (GW)

  • Choosing to be aware.

Most importantly, be disciplined and stay on guard. Your enemy the devil is prowling around outside like a roaring lion, just waiting and hoping for the chance to devour someone.

1 Peter 5:8 ( VOICE)
